Thyroid Treatment in Baltimore

Located in our neck, the thyroid gland affects our health and well-being. Whether it’s hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism, thyroid problems can profoundly affect our daily lives.

Thyroid glands produce hormones, primarily thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), which regulate various bodily functions. These hormones influence metabolism, energy levels, temperature regulation, and more, making the thyroid a critical part of our endocrine system.

Hyperthyroidism

When the Thyroid is Overactive. In hyperthyroidism, the thyroid gland becomes overactive, leading to an excessive production of thyroid hormones. Some common symptoms of hyperthyroidism include:

  • Unexplained Weight Loss Despite regular eating, people with hyperthyroidism may experience significant weight loss.
  • Nervousness and Anxiety: An overactive thyroid can lead to feelings of anxiety, nervousness, and restlessness.
  • Increased Heart Rate: Palpitations and a rapid heart rate are common symptoms of hyperthyroidism.
  • Sweating and Heat Intolerance: Excessive sweating and an inability to tolerate heat are common signs.
  • Tremors and Muscle Weakness: Muscle weakness and tremors, especially in the hands, may occur.

Hypothyroidism

A thyroid gland that isn’t active enough doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones, causing hypothyroidism.

This can lead to various symptoms, such as:

  • Fatigue: Overwhelming tiredness and fatigue are common in hypothyroidism.
  • Weight Gain: Unexplained weight gain and difficulty losing weight may occur.
  • Depression: Changes in mood, including depression and low motivation, can be associated with hypothyroidism.
  • Cold Sensitivity: Feeling excessively cold, even in warm environments, is a common symptom.
  • Dry Skin and Hair: Dry skin, brittle nails, and thinning hair are also signs of an underactive thyroid.

Testing for Thyroid Issues

To identify issues with the thyroid, doctors usually conduct blood tests to check the amounts Thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). If the TSH level is unusual, it may suggest a problem with the thyroid. Furthermore, using an ultrasound or similar tests can reveal any physical abnormalities with the thyroid gland.

A Holistic Approach to Thyroid Treatment

A holistic approach to thyroid treatment goes beyond conventional medication and seeks to address the root causes of thyroid dysfunction.

Here are some elements of a holistic thyroid treatment plan:

  • Nutrition: A well-balanced diet, rich in iodine, selenium, and other essential nutrients, can support thyroid health.
  • Stress Management: Chronic stress can disrupt thyroid function, but stress reduction techniques like meditation, yoga, and deep breathing exercises can help.
  • Regular Exercise: Regular exercise can also improve metabolism and energy levels, both of which are important for thyroid health.
  • Herbal and Nutritional Supplements: Some supplements, like ashwagandha and selenium, may support thyroid health.
  • Thyroid-Supportive Therapies: Complementary therapies like acupuncture and chiropractic care can aid in thyroid balance.
  • Medication: In some cases, prescription medication may be necessary to regulate thyroid hormones.
  • Regular Monitoring: Ongoing monitoring of thyroid function is crucial to adjusting treatment plans as needed.

Your thyroid health is a critical aspect of your overall well-being.

It’s good to learn about the thyroid and how it works. Knowing the signs of an overactive (hyperthyroidism) or underactive (hypothyroidism) thyroid is important.

A well-rounded treatment approach can help you lead a healthy and energetic life. If you think you might have a thyroid problem, talk to a doctor. They can help diagnose the issue and create a treatment plan just for you.

I highly recommend Dr Lauren at Green Relief. I never thought I would look into getting lip filler done but after a prior dental accident I was very self conscious about my smile as my gums are discolored and thought it wouldn’t hurt to having a consult. Having my lips fuller helps hide the discoloration of my gums and I’m so glad that I went with getting them done. Dr Lauren is wonderful. She took the time to educate and explained things to me. I love my smile again. Thank you!

Frequently Asked Questions

The most common treatment for thyroid cancer is thyroid gland removal followed by radioactive iodine therapy. This treatment approach involves surgically removing the thyroid gland and then using radioactive iodine to kill any remaining thyroid cancer cells, including metastases.

Treatment for hypothyroidism consists of taking synthetic thyroid hormones to normalize hormone levels. This medication is usually taken daily and should be monitored regularly by a physician.

For hyperthyroidism, treatment options may include antithyroid medications that inhibit thyroid hormone production, radioactive iodine therapy to destroy overactive thyroid cells, or thyroid surgery.

There may not be sufficient evidence to answer exactly what habits cause thyroid disorders. However, certain factors such as genetics, autoimmune conditions, and iodine deficiency can contribute to thyroid disorders.

To check the thyroid, various tests can be performed. The most common tests include blood tests and imaging tests. Blood tests measure thyroid hormone levels (T3, T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Ultrasounds and thyroid scans, can provide visual information about the size, shape, and structure of the thyroid gland.

Thyroid disorders do not normally occur as a result of stress, but stress can exacerbate the condition.
